Don’t stress yourself, it is only perimenopause!

Are you a woman who cannot sleep like how you used in the past or feel that the body is no more cooperating with you as it used to? You keep gaining weight irrespective of what you eat and get irritated at every opportunity. You also cannot recall why you walked into the kitchen or where you kept the car keys and is almost convinced that you are crazy. If you are around 40 or above it is a normal episode because soon you are going to attain menopause or currently going through perimenopause.

What is perimenopause?

This happens between the periods of child bearing and menopause and the above symptoms are the signals that you are experiencing the transition. Your family, doctor or friends may or may not think that you are going bonkers, but you are not. The feeling can be intense with some women and some may not even feel the symptoms. You cannot be declared as menopausal until your menstrual cycles have passed at least a year. Perimenopause symptoms can even start before the age 40 or even the 30s. If you have these symptoms it is time that you talk to your physician/pharmacists because help is available and you don’t have to suffer needlessly.

What are the common signs and symptoms of perimenopause?

Change of menstrual cycle and irregular periods: During perimenopause periods will become irregular and would occur in an interval of two or four months. The interval will keep expanding with time and at times periods could be lighter or heavier.

Night sweat and hot flashes: Sometimes you will experience as if heat is spreading all over your body giving way to sweating and redness.  The redness is known as hot flash and it happens when your body temperature increases. The perimenopause symptoms are triggered by hormonal disturbances in the body which in turn affects hypothalamus responsible for controlling body temperature.

Reduced sex drive: blood flow to the vaginal area is significantly decreased due to low production of estrogen. The vagina becomes less sensitive due to the labia getting smaller and shrinking of clitoris. Significant changes taking place in cervix, uterus, and ovaries are common with this condition.

Troubled sleep and insomnia: Women may have trouble sleeping during this time and would wake up hot and sweating.

Weight increase and collection of abdominal fat: metabolism slows down during this period resulting in the mass reduction in muscles and bones becoming less dense. It is also common for women to collect fat in the abdominal area. Healthy eating and regular exercise is important during this time.

Vaginal Changes/dryness/urine leakage: Vaginal walls lose elasticity and it becomes short. This is known as vaginal atrophy. You become susceptible to frequent urinary tract infections and experience dryness and thinness. Owing to less vaginal fluid production body becomes unable to flush out bacteria and fall victim to urinary tract infections. Women may experience urine leakage while coughing or sneezing.

Hair thinning and dry skins: skin would show signs of aging and dark spots, wrinkles, dryness, and itching would be experienced. You will also feel the skin becoming less elastic.

Depression/mood swings/anxiety: You feeling tired all the time and will show signs of depression such as irritability, fatigue and anxiety. Women with perimenopause are found to have higher levels of MAO-A, which is an enzyme responsible for breaking down norepinephrine, serotonin and dopamine. Such a condition is connected with major depressive disorders in women.

Tenderness of breasts: your breast may shrink and become smaller. It will have less density and accumulate fat giving way to sagging.

Regular headaches and migraine: you will experience frequent headaches or a migraine owing to lack of sleep, reduced blood flow, anxiety and other issues related to perimenopause.

Confused thinking/poor focus: Your moods, motivation and memory are administered by testosterone and estrogens and with perimenopause, you could experience forgetfulness, loss of concentration, stress and drowsiness. The condition may worse with lack of sleep and high anxiety. Nourishing dies is important to revive the condition.

Palpitations of heart: the condition occurs owing to the changes happening to heart and autonomic nerve system and blood vessels. Palpitations can be experienced during episodes of hot flashes, headaches, muscle spasms and anxiety.

Risks and complications: according to studies a woman stands to risk cardiovascular diseases during menopause and after. They could also experience reduced levels of estrogen resulting in weak bones and loss of bone density. You could also suffer from increased osteoporosis.
